History

The USS McCaffery was laid down in October, 1944 by Bethlehem Steel Company in San Pedro, California, launched in April, 1945, and commissioned in July, 1945.

The USS McCAFFERY (DD/DDE-860) was a Gearing-class destroyer, named for Lieutenant Colonel Joseph P. McCaffery, USMC, killed in action at Bougainville on 1 November 1943, and posthumously awarded the Navy Cross. Nicknamed "Big Mac", McCaffery was laid down by Bethlehem Steel Corporation.
